Franklin Expedition of 1845 - the only surviving document

This military expedition was sent by the most powerful nation on earth to the Canadian Arctic. No one survived.

Over 12 years, 32 search parties found a few graves, cairns with items such as this paper, and little else.

In reading numerous accounts of early British and American expeditions to the arctic, it is rather obvious that one had to ditch the natty woolen uniforms and gear, and embrace the natives’ techniques to survive.

Those who did not … were always found as, or after, they died of scurvy, starvation or exposure … in their tents.
