GG-1 Electric Locomotives at Juniata Shops

‘General view of GG-1 electric locomotives being constructed at Altoona. In this operation cabs are being applied to the locomotives, about 1935. Eighteen of the GG-1 locomotives were built at the Altoona Works and in addition 25 of the locomotives built at locomotive plants were forwarded to Altoona for installation of the electrical equipment in the cab, as well as application of motors and for final painting and striping. The steam heat boilers installed in all of the GG-1 locomotives were built at the Juniata Boiler Shop, Altoona.’

[Passenger car heating used steam radiators which were designed to be operated with steam locomotives … so these electrics had to be able to make steam somehow. Heavy travelling overhead cranes were handy locations from which to take pictures like this.]
