… very similar to British textile mill work accounts of the period. Lunch was eaten at the running machinery. Young adults developed permanent physical disabilities from leaning over the machinery and from accidents.

This post might help some understand why unions formed and why the government began to regulate industry. The ‘invisible hand’ of the market was not human or humane when it wasn’t being ‘supervised’.
