Winnipeg Railway Approaches, 1920
The Canadian Northern Railway is ducking south-east across to the US, but this routing was because of the original traffic protection guarantees provided to the CPR Syndicate circa 1881. The Canadian Northern is headed for the lakehead (today’s Thunder Bay) - but via the US. The ‘Grand Trunk’ (National Transcontinental) came along later.
Western grain exports to Europe rolled through Winnipeg - where samples were taken from each car.
By the time the boxcar of grain had reached the terminal elevators at Lake Superior, the inspectors had rated the quality of the wheat (or other grain) and telegraphed their verdict for each carload. Grain was stored in individual grain bins in the terminal elevators based on its quality grading. This government system maintained foreign confidence in Canadian grain exports.

You’ll see the towns represented by the postcards along the railway line beginning near TERREBONNE, just north-west of Montreal. On this map, the solid black lines are main railway lines, the alternating black/white lines are railway branchlines.
Just north of Labelle is Macaza. This was the site of one of Canada’s Bomarc Missile installations. These surface-to-air, nuclear-tipped (if the Americans gave us the warheads) missiles were designed to shoot down entire formations of Soviet bombers during the Cold War.

Tate, Georgia
Here are a few posts to follow on Lisa’s excellent photos of the Tate station. In particular it was enjoyable to decipher the empty tin of Copenhagen SNUFF … perhaps a tradition passed on from the original British settlers?
This map shows the lay of the land circa 1920. Back then there were few autos and few auto-worthy roads, so only railroads are marked on this map. Leaving Atlanta, a Louisville and Nashville train would leave the main line (bold) and proceed via the junction at Marietta along the branch to Tate (due north of Atlanta). This map is nice because it generally shows the actual route of the lines.
